THE DIRT with Mike D.

Fall has arrived and here are a few tips and projects you can do in the next few weeks, before the busy holiday season begins!

Did you know Fall is one of the best seasons to plant trees, shrubs and perennials? The ground is still warm from summer and shorter days mean plant growth is also slowing down. This also means there is less transplant shock for new plantings.

Active root growth occurs during winter months, resulting in a good burst of growth come spring. Plants purchased from the garden center at this time of year are generally larger due to the growth all spring and summer, and VW's has some amazing discounted prices as the season winds down.

Here is another gardening secret: You can greatly reduce weed growth next Spring by eradicating weeds now! Time spent weeding in the Fall actually pays off! So get out there on those cool fall days and get weeding.

Fall is a great time plant spring bulbs.

Tulips, daffodils, crocus and more should be planted now for a great burst of early spring color. Plant bulbs in groups for best results and long lasting color. For example, plant crocus (early bloomer), daffodils to bloom after, and tulips for a blast of blooms!

Keep Growin',

Mike
